Leadership in Engineering
All three variations of the Oldham/Universal coupling offer the advantages of a conventional Oldham coupling, with the added angular flexibility of a universal joint. OEP’s team of engineers designed this unique coupling keeping their customers’ specific application requirements foremost during the development process. In many ways, the Oldham/universal coupling is the ultimate flexible shaft coupling.

The Oldham/Universal type UC was developed to accommodate large radial and angular misalignment, up to 6 degrees, while exerting relatively small reactive forces on support bearings. It has zero backlash and also provides electrical insulation between the two shafts. The type UC’s midsection is inexpensive and an easily replaceable wear element. Under overload, the midsection serves as a mechanical fuse, breaking and decoupling the two shafts. Each component is precision machined; therefore, each coupling is manufactured to much tighter dimensional tolerances and the end product is a part with less internal stress than molding. This gives the OEP type UC, and in fact the entire product line, higher static break torque, higher peak torque, longer service life, small physical size, mass and moment of inertia than its rivals.

The Oldham/Universal type UI differs from the UC in one very important way. The fins are longer, and the grooves in the midsection are deeper, so that the fins overlap as seen from the side. The axes of the two fins lie on the same plane, rather than being offset from one another as they are in the UC. This allows for a smoother, more universal sort of flexion, and is much more quiet and efficient at high rpm. The UI has all of the advantages of the type UC with the exception that the midsection does not serve as a sacrificial mechanical fuse during overload.

The Oldham/Universal type UA was added by our design engineers to meet the need for a very strong, stiff, robust flexible shaft coupling. It differs from the UC and UI in that its midsection is machined from metal bar, the same alloy as the hubs. A replaceable plastic wear bushing between the cylindrical fins on the hub and the cylindrical slots in the midsection provide smooth, low-friction, low-reactive-force flexion with zerobacklash. The wear bushings include very small holes that serve as a grease reservoir. OEP has designed what is, in many ways, the ultimate flexible shaft coupling. It offers all the advantages of the other types of couplings, other than the mechanical fuse feature, and it offers them to a great degree.

No other flexible coupling with a torque rating as high as the UA offers reactive forces as low as the UA; and no other flexible coupling with reactive forces as low as the UA offers a torque rating this high. No other flexible coupling with this degree of flexibility (up to 0.050” radial and up to 6 degrees angular misalignment) is as stiff or as strong as the UA; and no other coupling approaching the UA’s strength and stiffness offers anything close to this degree of flexibility.

OEP Couplings manufactures a complete line of high-performance, innovative shaft couplings, precisely machined from advanced materials, using the most sophisticated machining technology available. The subcomponents for their couplings are produced on CNC multi-axis turning centers with live tooling, capable of holding micron tolerances, under a quality system registered to the ISO9001:2000 standard. Unique complex geometries and high-tech coatings are employed to optimize performance.

OEP Couplings is a division of Oren Elliott Products, Inc., founded in 1925. Since that time, screw-machined subcomponents have been produced at the Plant One facility, and millions of screw machine parts and electromechanical assemblies were produced here for the Allied war effort during World War II. Throughout the past 85+ years, Oren Elliott Products, Inc has offered considerable value and machining expertise to its customers worldwide.

Coupling types offered include variations of Oldham, Oldham/Universal, block, jaw or spider, magnetic and rigid couplings, as well as universal joints. Each type is available in a variety of sizes, materials, attachment options and bore types.
