Huco Dynatork - Leader in Precision Couplings, Air Motors

Huco Dynatork is world-renowned for its expertise in the precision miniature coupling niche of the industrial marketplace. Huco’s acquisition of the Dynatork piston air motor business in 2005 is another good example of the firm’s successful niche strategy. Although Huco Dynatork has broad product offerings in motion control, power transmission and assembly components, the firm is dominant in these two strongest product lines.

Huco Small Precision Couplings

Simply stated, Huco offers the most comprehensive range of small precision coupling types available from a single manufacturer. Huco’s precision couplings are ideal for use in high-end servo drives, pulse generators, scanners, X-Y positioning slides, high speed dynamometers, measuring instruments, robots, machine tools, and in many other applications.

Huco’s website, www.huco.com, lists 18 different styles of precision couplings ranging from Oldham to bellows to rigid, in many variations of configuration. But to help the design engineer choose from the dizzying array of devices, the website also offers a very informative Design Guide as well as an interactive Coupling Selector tool that engineers can use to identify the perfect combination of coupling and application for their specific project.

“Selecting the right shaft coupling can be the difference between a drive system that provides the required dynamic response and one that is catastrophic,” says David Lockett, Joint Managing Director. “Several factors should always be taken into consideration whether you’re looking to compensate for misalignment or to ensure high-precision positioning. These are torsional stiffness, backlash, torque, life and attachment system."

Dynatork Air Motors

The unique design of the Dynatork Air Motor makes it the world’s only precise stepable air motor. General characteristics include instant stop-start, maximum torque at start, speed control, reversing, low air consumption and programmed control. The motor is available for lubricated or non-lubricated operation, and it can operate totally submerged.

The operating principle of the air motor is simple. Via an integral rotary valve, air up to 6.5 bar is supplied to each of three pistons. The free-floating pistons transmit torque on start-up that can be adjusted via a pressure regulator. This results in high torque at variable low speed and low noise.

Three motor sizes are available in aluminium as standard, cast iron for harsh environments and acetal for food and drug industries.

Redesigned in 2008 with internal air passages that replace the previously external tube structure, the motor excels in challenging environments and in constant start/stop applications under load, displaying similar characteristics to a stepper motor which makes the motor a perfect choice for position control as well as paint and liquid stirring applications.

Ideal for underwater applications such as opening a valve or propelling a stirring mechanism, the motor is also a good choice for caustic washdown environments with high pressure hosing. And a new non-magnetic model is generating considerable interest in nuclear applications involving particle acceleration or in systems such as MRI scanners.

HUCO DYNATORK

The story of Huco Dynatork is a tale of two innovators. Huco was the first manufacturer to successfully adapt properties of engineering plastics, in combination with metals, to create a wide range of innovative misalignment couplings.

Dynatork was a highly successful manufacturer of cleverly designed piston air motors. Both served a unique specialized market niche.

In August 2005, the British firms merged to form a combination of strong brands with proven performance in their respective fields. Less than a year later, the new Huco Dynatork joined the global power transmission group, Altra Industrial Motion.

Joint Managing Director David Lockett says the business strategy is paying dividends. “One of benefits of joining Altra is the group’s proven business models for lean manufacturing,” Lockett says. “We’ve reduced lead times and improved quality and operational efficiencies by adopting the Altra Business System.”

Now, Huco Dynatork is recognized as a world leader in the specialized field of precision couplings, with an enviable reputation for quality air motor products. “Our skills in making small components have been recognized by other companies within Altra and we are now making components for them as well,” Lockett says.
