Contactless sensing for buttons, knobs, and door open/close detection, as well as speed and direction without requiring a magnet can be a big plus in many designs. Other capabilities simply make the design decision easier. Called the industry’s first differential inductive switch, Texas instruments’ LDC0851 has a dual-coil architecture that performs contactless sensing and automatically compensates for variations in temperature and component aging. The use of coils drawn on a printed circuit board (PCB) allows the sensor to detect the presence or absence of conductive material.
In addition to the LDC0851EVM evaluation module that helps designers easily configure the LDC0851 and start a system design without requiring programming, TI also has reference designs for the sensor.
