A screwdriving robot that delivers speed and streamlined integration

By Michelle Froese | April 27, 2023

Visumatic, an expert in automated fastening technology, offers the Viper MBC — an engineered screwdriving robot package for seamless integration. This Visumatic feed and install system incorporates a four-axis SCARA robot that delivers lightning-fast screwdriving and flawless fastener delivery. The Viper MBC is preconfigured and modular, so it can be quickly deployed.

Watch the Viper MBC Robotic Screwdriver in action here.

The Viper MBC end-of-arm tooling is designed with a choice of a DC electric screwdriving tool and the SCARA robot. Built-in quality control with four-axis NIST traceability and screw-tightening torque/angle monitoring.

Complete process accountability is provided through electrical handshaking packages and SPC data reporting via DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP, and more.

Case study
An automotive air intake manufacturer recently reached out to Visumatic for assistance assembling a new model with multiple screws joining case halves with a sealing gasket in between.

Although initially conceived as a six-axis robot — since the fasteners were all installed in the same vertical plane — the machine builder recommended using the Viper MBC to deliver faster screwdriving and point-to-point robot moves.

The torque and angle control screwdriver integration provided custom rundown strategies for each screw install point. This flexibility ensured maximum joint control while compressing the gasket providing a consistent seal across the entire perimeter.

Visumatic’s unique through-the-quill integration results in zero offset screwdriving. This simplifies teach point programming, eliminating the need for cumbersome offset calculations.

By working with Visumatic to identify the application dynamics and selecting our best fit fastening technology, the machine builder was able to deliver a more reliable long-term value to their customer.

Viper MBC features
The flexible design allows robot placement in a variety of assembly processes, including:

  • As an assembly line conveyor screwdriving station
  • Installing different fasteners, nuts, screws, and plastic clips
  • Inserting barbed darts and pins
  • Integration into rotary indexing systems
