The town of Rock Hill, S.C., is working with Comporium to upgrade the area’s communications network to support data rates up to 1 Gbps. Comporium will deploy networking equipment from Adtran to create the service.
Rock Hill, Comporium, Winthrop University, and other local interests are all participating in an economic development and urban strategy to try to turn the city’s historical center into a technology hub. The parties involved hope to attract businesses spur economic growth by becoming one of the only Gigabit communities in the region. The project is called Knowledge Park.
Comporium is upgrading its network infrastructure by installing Adtran’s Total Access 5004, a compact system able to deliver services over existing infrastructure, fiber, or a combination of both. This provides unprecedented architecture scalability and the ability to provide operational cost savings with a single network, all services approach, Adtran said.
The Knowledge Park economic development plan is designed to take advantage of Rock Hill’s existing strengths, including the presence of a leading university and several major knowledge economy businesses.
Comporium and its community partners are also setting the stage to evolve and grow the city into one that can support an expanded business community, especially for industries that rely heavily on fast Internet speeds, including website and software development and 3D printing services.
“Rock Hill is a community with a vision to grow as a hub for knowledge economy businesses,” said Comporium’s Matthew Dosch, executive vice president of customer operations and external affairs. “With that mindset, Comporium has worked closely with our partners in the community to ensure that we are providing the infrastructure to support Rock Hill’s Knowledge Park strategy. Our discussions with leaders in other Gigabit communities around the country reinforced our desire to offer very high-speed Internet services to attract new companies, as well as give existing companies a competitive advantage in the new information economy.”
Comporium offers voice, video, data, Internet and security services to both residential and business customers throughout several North and South Carolina markets.
