An advanced biocompatible polycarbonate (PC) resin from SABIC Innovative Plastics is helping meet demands for safer and more reliable healthcare devices. The Pulsar hemodialysis blood pump is made with Lexan HPM resins, which help prevent the buildup of thrombus on the pump’s walls that could potentially lead to clotting and interfere with the outcome of dialysis treatments.
Renal Solutions worked with SABIC Innovative Plastics to identify a material that met the mechanical and physical needs for the blood pump’s hemodynamic filling design and improved upon existing problems with biomaterial surface chemistry.
Unlike standard PC, the Lexan resins reduce the deposition of platelets, fibrinogens, and clots onto the pump walls, as well as the activation of leukocytes and C3a proteins. According to SABIC Innovative Plastics, this could improve the preservation of blood composition, thereby lowering the chance for thrombosis or clotting in the pump.
