Aerospace Adds Pistons and Cylinders Capability to Its Service Portfolio Business Editors

By The Associated Press | June 14, 2009

BRISTOL, Conn.– (BUSINESS WIRE) — Jun. 15, 2009– In today’s difficult economic environment, Barnes Aerospace, a business of Barnes Group Inc. (NYSE: B) and global provider of manufacturing solutions and comprehensive component overhaul and repair services, now offers customers an outsourcing solution for their piston and cylinder needs.

Building on its reputation as a leading supplier of highly engineered, machined and fabricated components and assemblies in the aerospace industry, the Company has enhanced its portfolio of services, creating a Piston and Cylinder Center of Excellence at its Phoenix, Arizona facility. This new Center of Excellence reinforces the Company’s commitment to deliver superior performance, quality and service to it diverse customer base.

“Customers currently manufacturing pistons and cylinders have been looking for an outsourcing partner to free up their resources or add capacity. While many of our competitors are holding steady in these difficult economic times, we, at Barnes Aerospace, continue to make strategic investments in not only our future – but that of our customers,” said Brent Wiberg, President, Barnes Aerospace, OEM. “Our new Piston and Cylinder Center of Excellence delivers the leading services, skills and capabilities that customers have come to expect from Barnes Aerospace.”

With top-tier performance its highest priority, the Company assembled a cross-functional team of its leading engineers, lean experts, materials specialists and quality managers to establish the Piston and Cylinder Center of Excellence. Twelve new state-of-the-art machines, including mill/turns and deep hole drills, have been added to the Phoenix Division, providing piston and cylinder machining capabilities up to 1.5 meters in length and deep hole drilling up to 3 meters. This investment expands the Company’s opportunities on commercial and military platforms, and is already paying off. GE Mechanical Systems, a division of GE Aviation, recently awarded the Company a multi-million dollar contract for pistons and cylinders for its A380 and 787 landing gear assemblies through 2022.

“Our customers expect the best from Barnes Aerospace and we deliver with the Piston and Cylinder Center of Excellence. Our team has scrutinized every phase of the implementation process from investing in the most durable and dependable machines to providing in-depth training to our operators,” Wiberg said. “The multi-faceted transition plan also included pre-production Kaizen events and culminated in the restructuring of the Phoenix facility’s layout to maximize manufacturing efficiencies.”
