AMCI adds Profibus-DP to NR25 encoder lineup

By Motion Control Tips Editor | May 29, 2012

Advanced Micro Controls Inc. (AMCI) (www.amci.com) has expanded its lineup of NR25 series encoders with the addition of Profibus-DP communication.

Compatible with all PLCs supporting Profibus-DP, the all-new AMCI NR25 Profibus-DP encoders feature up to 30 bit resolution and are offered in both multi-turn and single-turn versions.

Using a “daisy-chain” bus topology, the Profibus-DP encoders features a single Profibus cable linked from the master (like a PLC) to the first slave (device) and through every additional device on the network. The NR25 eliminates the need to learn additional software since it can be programmed via the host PLC software. Users can also use a downloadable PC based graphical user interface (GUI) to easily set the position resolution, address, velocity format, counting direction and preset value through the Profibus network.

Designed to deliver absolute position feedback without sensitive LED components or glass discs, the NR25 encoders are available in a 2.5-inch diameter package that comes with three M12 connectors on the back, providing power and Profibus-DP connectivity. They are also resolver based and can withstand high levels of vibration and shock. Meanwhile, their IP67 rated package makes them ideally suited for use in multi-turn and single-turn position applications demanding protection from water ingress and dust. With the stainless steel versions, the NR25 encoders are also suitable for use in food grade and marine environments.

Profibus-DP is the most commonly used profile in Profibus — an open, supplier-independent field bus standard for a vast array of applications in manufacturing as well as process automation. Optimized for efficiency, speed and low connection costs, Profibus-DP is specifically designed for communication between distributed peripherals and automation systems.
