Announcing the 2024 LEAP Awards in motion control

By Lisa Eitel | October 31, 2024

Now in its seventh year, Design World’s annual Awards in Leadership in Engineering Achievement Program highlights innovation and engineering achievements from around the globe. This year, the expert independent judging panel reviewed dozens of submissions to award gold, silver, and bronze winners across 10 categories.

The following products were recognized in the 2024 LEAP Awards in Motion Control for their innovative value.

2024 LEAP Awards in Motion Control: Bronze

EtherCAT MainDevice with Redundancy Port

A product from Delta Motion

The ECAT module provides EtherCAT MainDevice functionality, allowing control of electric motor drives and communication with other EtherCAT subordinate devices such as sensors and actuators. With two RJ-45 ports, the ECAT module supports cable redundancy.

The new R200-ECAT MainDevice module is compatible with both the RMC200 Lite and Standard, allowing control of up to 18 and 50 axes, respectively. The module easily plugs into any RMC200 base, occupying the slot adjacent to the CPU module. Design engineers can upgrade by purchasing the R200-ECAT module and performing a firmware update. The enhanced functionality supports Delta’s renowned position, velocity, pressure, and force control capabilities via EtherCAT or a combination of EtherCAT devices and plug-in modules. The adoption of EtherCAT, known for its high speed and minimal jitter, highlights Delta Motion’s dedication to high-performance control. With its widespread global acceptance, particularly among motor drives, EtherCAT also broadens the connectivity of RMC Motion Controllers, easing integration with a diverse range of actuators and sensors from third-party vendors.

EtherCAT, an Ethernet-based fieldbus system, simplifies wiring, reduces costs, and streamlines the design of complex machines. EtherCAT expands Delta’s support for both hydraulic and electromechanical control. Integration with motor drives is now easier and design engineers have greater flexibility and access to a broader array of products.

2024 LEAP Awards in Motion Control: Silver

AMT12 Incremental Encoder Series

A product from CUI Devices

CUI Devices’ AMT12 series is a rugged, high accuracy incremental encoder offering 16 programmable resolutions from 96 to 4096 PPR. Thanks to its innovative capacitive platform, the series isn’t susceptible to contaminants such as dirt, dust, and oil that typically plague encoders in industrial environments.

The AMT12’s design also simplifies the assembly process, reducing the time-consuming tasks of mounting and alignment to mere seconds. Combined with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, high accuracy, a compact 22 mm package, and low current draw, the AMT12 provides a compelling solution for a range of industrial, automation, robotics, and renewable energy applications.

2024 LEAP Awards in Motion Control: Gold

FM060-100-CM

A product from ADVANCED Motion Controls

The mini-sized FM060-100-CM FlexPro drive with IMPACT architecture is an all-purpose digital servo drive for centralized or distributed control systems with CANopen communication. Its compact size makes it suitable for any application where space is a limiting factor. Boasting a 100-amp continuous and 200-amp peak current rating, this servo drive is a power-density marvel.
