AT&T said Monday it has partnered with satellite communications company Globecomm to provide fallback connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
According to AT&T, the partnership will help ease IoT deployments by creating a one-stop shop for companies to address their connectivity needs.
Under the partnership, AT&T is planning to launch a new service that will allow satellite connections to work in conjunction with its cellular network. IoT devices will function on a cellular signal when one is available and will automatically change over to satellite service when cellular coverage isn’t an option.
“Our customers now have a flexible, reliable and highly secure service to monitor their assets nearly anywhere,” said AT&T IoT Solutions vice president Mike Troiano. “They don’t have to choose one connectivity solution over the other – they can have the full package.”
The announcement came alongside news that AT&T is also working with Otis Elevator Company to bring IoT connectivity to elevator, escalator and moving walkway equipment.
Otis currently has service contracts for nearly 2 million elevators.
