Basics: What is a clamping screw

By Mike Santora | December 7, 2016

Coupling Tips

Clamping screws are machine elements which use screw thrust for workpiece fixing and positioning. Point contact by the full ball securely fixes the workpiece.

Advantages of using Clamping Screws

By replacing hex socket head cap screws and hex socket set screws with clamping bolts when clamping (fixing) workpieces, point contact with workpieces can be achieved. This transmits force to the workpiece and keeps the clamp secure.

Additionally, when clamping inclined workpiece surfaces, use the flat ball type to allow the tip ball to rotate freely, so that the ball flat surface makes surface contact with the workpiece inclined surface, achieving secure clamping.

Less time and trouble spent on manufacturing workpiece fixing jigs and maintenance.

When fixing the workpiece by clamping its inclined surface, the jib body must be machined to match the workpiece shape. However, with clamping screws , the jig body just needs screw threading. Jig body shapes can be made simpler. In addition, if the workpiece contact surface wears, just replace the clamping screw. The time and trouble of maintenance is reduced.
