Baumer’s HS35F incremental encoder now comes with EMS

By Motion Control Tips Editor | July 10, 2012

Baumer (www.baumer.com) has integrated the HS35F incremental hollow shaft encoder with an enhanced monitoring system (EMS), which enables it to immediately detect device failure.

The HS35F EMS encoder is specifically designed to endure extreme mechanical strain and deliver positioning/speed control. It also allows manufacturers to minimize expensive downtime as well as improve the reliability and safety of heavy duty processing lines.

Once the encoder is activated, a microprocessor monitors the device all throughout its speed range. Should a potential failure be detected, an alarm sends a message to the master controller regarding the malfunction. A green LED activity light provides a visual signal of the encoder’s proper operation, while a red LED light signals an output driver overload. On the other hand, the encoder could be improperly connected or is not supplying signal if the LED activity light is off.

Available for shaft diameters ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 inches, the hollow shaft encoder can also be customized with shaft insert adapters to prevent bearing corrosion/wear and provide electrical isolation from voltages up to 2.5 kV. It also features a heavy duty design, which includes wall structures and extra durable castings. Lubricants, dual seals and durable powder coating on the bearing cover and housing allow operation in almost all environmental conditions while protecting it against corrosion.

Baumer’s HS35F EMS encoders are ideally suited for motor and drive control in wind power, oil and gas processing, metalworking, food and beverage processing, packaging, printing, solar/PV module manufacturing, textile processing, material handling and wood/lumber processing applications. It is also ideal for heavy equipment such as hoists, cranes, service vehicles and elevators.
