Bearing manufacturer releases 2014 environmental achievements

By Mike Santora | May 15, 2015

NSK-logo-imageNSK Americas annually measures its achievements to advance global warming countermeasures, resource conservation and recycling, and biodiversity conservation. As a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) WasteWise program, NSK’s past year saved:

27,795 trees – equivalent to 382,851,000 sheets of newspaper
757,005,000 gallons of oil – enough to heat 3,752 homes for a year
11,445,000 gallons of water – enough to meet the daily needs of 152,600 Americans
39,240 gallons of gasoline – enough to drive a mid-size car 1,097,600 miles
6,703,500 kilowatt hours of electricity – enough to power 4,902 homes for a year

NSK Headquarters NSK Americas Headquarters and Technical Center now has an ISO 14001 compliance certification.

In 2013, NSK’s environmental and safety portfolio was established as a stand-alone corporate operating department, headed by Susan Diehl, Vice President, Legal and General Counsel. Marcia Fournier, Environmental and Chemical Manager, and the company’s front-line green ambassador, notes continued evolutions to the program since its inception.

“We recently implemented a new data management platform to track environmental, health and safety metrics. This will better enable NSK to develop proactive strategies to reduce emissions and reduce safety incidents.”

Imminent plans include the implementation of a material compliance application which tracks regulated substances within NSK products and purchased products against national and global environmental standards. This will support customers who may require reporting on specific substances and will allow NSK to consistently meet compliance standards.

As a contributing member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) WasteWise program, NSK strives to meet a series of internal benchmarks which translate into sustainability numbers regarding how many trees, how much water, etc. the company has saved. The 2013 results for each benchmark represent improvements ranging from 20%-37.5% over the previous year.

All seven NSK U.S. manufacturing facilities are ISO 14001 third-party registered, with NSK Americas Headquarters and Technical Center recently achieving ISO 14001 compliance certification.
