With OEM designs, you invariably face interfacing issues no matter what cameras you use. Issues from printed or surface defects in a variety of applications and materials include: tag and label, flexible packaging, folding carton, converting, plastics, non-woven, paper, and foil. Active Inspection (AI) solved these problems by specifying Teledyne DALSA’s Piranha line of scan cameras. AI designs vision systems for machine builders to incorporate into printing presses, packaging machines, and other web/sheet-fed or form machines. Based on user requirements, each AI video station incorporates image processors, I/O, AI software application, lighting, encoder kits, and between one and four color and/or grayscale Teledyne DALSA cameras. Whether the goal is to reduce waste, ensure consistency, maintain quality, or increase throughput, manufacturers count on AI to deliver high-performance turnkey inspection systems. Consisting of AI software bundled with video station hardware, AI’s two primary products—AISurface and AIPrint—are built around Teledyne DALSA’s Piranha line scan cameras.
AI increases profits, while reducing costs at the earliest stage possible. The AISurface substrate inspection software system detects defects – including gels, skips, pinholes, and contamination – on aluminum and other metals, paper, and non-woven materials. The software features adaptable filters for different materials, an easy-to-use classification system, roll mapping, and an XML data flow interface. This system was built around Teledyne DALSA’s powerful Piranha2 grayscale line scan cameras. Available in resolutions from 1k to 8k, and with two or four output taps at 40 MHz per tap, the Piranha2 line is versatile in accommodating a range of application requirements. Since the cameras share the same programming, control, and interface options, it is easy to program and use.
To resolve the issue of costly returns from mislabeling or other misidentification, The AIPrint inspection system was also built around the Piranha2 and Piranha Color cameras. The inspection system is an easy-to-use machine vision application that provides 100% inspection of printed webs and sheets. Used mainly for the pharmaceutical industry and other label inspections during the printing process, this software references a golden template to determine whether a product passes or fails the inspection. By offering a large variety of sensor widths and line speeds, the cameras accommodate many different manufacturers’ applications.
AI is currently developing a system for the labeling industry that will be a derivation of the current setup. It is uncertain whether the new offering will be built around a Piranha or a Spyder 3 camera with GigE interface; however, it is certain that the system will be using a Teledyne DALSA camera.
