Where would you put a printable sensor that can detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs)? Engineers at Peratech are working on a nose sensor embedded in clothing. Based on the company’s Quantum Tunneling Composite (QTC) material that change resistance when a force is applied, the polymer content of the sensor swells when exposed to VOCs. One form of the sensor uses granular QTC material to provide a high surface area for absorption. This allows the sensor to detect VOC levels in the region of 10-100 ppm. The sensor recovers quickly when the VOCs disperse.
Potential applications include military as well as any clothing worn by any person who might risk exposure to VOCs.
