Portable tablets and smartphones contain several sensors that detect motion, including an accelerometer, RGB light, digital compass or magnetometer, proximity, gyroscope and barometer. Many of these sensors make multi-axis measurements. The data are used for a wide range of applications including gaming, navigation and virtual reality.
For its recently launched Galaxy Note II, Samsung selected Atmel’s AVR UC3L microcontroller (MCU) with patented ultra-low power picoPower technology as the sensor hub management solution. Even though the Exynos 4 Quad SoC uses 20% less power than the SoC in its previous smartphones, the sensor hub MCU provides significant power consumption reduction and added performance for sensing applications.
