Danaher Motion SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2006 Highlights

By Design World Staff | December 6, 2006

New products reinforce  “Helping you build a better machine, faster”

Düsseldorf, Germany – Danaher Motion, the specialist in drive and control technology, focused on two new products at the SPS/IPC/Drives Fair in Nuremberg: the “Danaher Motion S700” digital servo amplifier and the compact “Danaher Motion Hybrid Stepper Motor”.

The Danaher Motion S700 is a new, powerful member of the SERVOSTAR product family providing additional functions that are fit for the future. The drive, which is compatible with the Servostar S300, is designed for rated output currents up to 24 A and features an Ethernet interface, which means customers do not need to use additional, expensive expansion cards. It also has a slot for a safety expansion card, which supports the latest safety functions, such as safely reduced speed and safe operational stop, thus facilitating operator intervention on the machine even when the motor is switched on. Another new feature on the S700 is the optional MMC memory card, which enables parameter records and firmware to be backed up and copied extremely quickly and easily in the field. Two other slots provided in addition to the safety slot are intended for use with the familiar S300 expansion cards as well as custom expansion cards requiring a large bus size.

With its “Danaher Motion Hybrid Stepper Motor”, Danaher Motion is launching an extremely powerful range of miniature motors onto the market. Thanks to the hybrid motor integrated in the housing, this new series is able to deliver torques up to 40% higher than those offered by other stepper motors of a similar size. These models also stand out from the crowd due to their excellent heat dissipation and very high lateral and radial load capacity. The motors, which have a step size of 1.8°, are available in NEMA flange sizes 17, 23 and 34. Various lengths are available for each flange size and the windings can be tailored to the particular application for which they are required. These features make the hybrid stepper motor extremely well suited to all fields requiring powerful miniature motors, such as medical engineering, textile and semiconductor production or electronic manufacturing.

Getting improved solutions to market faster
Christian Stockfleth, Danaher Motion’s Marketing Manager for Europe, says: “Our work focuses not only on extremely high quality, but also on intelligent innovations, cost and delivery times. By supplying exactly the right solutions at the required time and place, for example, we help to reduce the time Danaher Motion customers need to get their products to market.” Stockfleth adds that the Group’s products also have an impressive price/performance ratio and minimal operational and maintenance costs.

Solution sets – It’s all about the customer
In line with the company motto, Danaher Motion is combining an increasing number of custom, proven components to create sets known as solution or product sets. In assembling these sets, such as the AKM gearmotors exhibited at the last Motek Fair or the “Rotary Indexer Product Set”, the Group’s engineers ensure that the individual parts work together safely and in perfect harmony, thus guaranteeing optimum performance characteristics. This innovative approach from Danaher Motion means that customers also benefit from particularly reliable, cost-effective operation, significantly reduced development times, and a simplified ordering procedure.

Drive and Control Technology

AKM gear motors

This solution set, which combines AKM servomotors with the tried and tested TRUE planetary gearheads, guarantees short installation and testing times and, since the two modules are so perfectly matched, optimum performance. In addition, particularly high torques and optimized precision are further hallmarks of the AKM gearmotors. These along with a variety of other features make them suitable for the most challenging applications.

The highly dynamic, high speed AKM solutions, which are available in an extraordinarily wide range, boast one of the highest torque densities on the market, as well as a special cogging and distortion-reducing electromagnetic design. Customers have a standard choice of over 14 feedback options for the resolver, SFD (smart feedback device), commutation encoder and absolute sine encoder. The motors conform to all the important international installation standards, including European standards, although they are also available in customized designs upon request.

Danaher Motion also possesses an unusually wide range of TRUE planetary gearheads. The extremely torsion-proof gearheads are available in housings of 40 to 220 mm and with transmission ratios of between 1:1 and 500:1. Thanks to the helical toothed design, optimized values can be achieved in terms of load-bearing capability, smooth running, torque and precision. The gearhead backlash throughout the service life is under 4 minutes of arc thanks to the hardened, non-wearing toothed wheels. TRUE planetary gearheads have lifetime lubrication, are completely maintenance-free and possess a non-rusting, very hard-wearing steel housing for use in challenging environments.
