The Department of Defense’s research agency plans to develop a set of reference documents for 3D printing.
The Open Manufacturing program is designed to give manufacturers more ‘confidence’ when working with 3D printing. It will clear up questions about how well a certain material prints or if its properties change in the process of printing. Initially, DARPA will focus on nickel and titanium as well as bonded composite structures.
Penn State and the Army Research Lab will also contribute to the research.
