December 15 2013: Special Issue

We decided to do something a little bit different with our December 15 issue this year, so with that in mind: Welcome you to a very special edition of ECN.

While you’ll see a few of your favorites including Everything E (page 10) and Leading Off (page 8), you might notice a few sections are missing. That’s because we decided to focus this issue on four different areas in the Electronic Design field. After much debate, we narrowed the topics down to: Military, 3D Printing, Power and Automotive. Each of the four sections features either a profile of a leader in that area or an article about something interesting happening in the industry. Each of the sections also features a community section where ECN Readers and experts were invited to answer a specific question about trends and technology in each of the four featured areas.

Our military section (page 12) focuses on a profile of Steve Sargeant, a former Major General in the US Air Force who is now CEO of Marvin Test Solutions. The 3D printing section (page 16) features an article about how this innovation is forever changing the design industry. Head to the Power section (page 20) for a profile of Embedded Power Labs’ Bob White and if you’re interested in V2V, Tullio Cettolin from Micron’s Automotive Division explores the possibilities (page 23).

Another exciting announcement is the official kickoff of the new ECN IMPACT Awards. The Awards were created to recognize excellence and ground breaking innovation in design engineering. The IMPACT Awards, which will be officially presented at EDS in Las Vegas on May 6, 2014, will highlight the greatest products from 2013 across 18 categories.

A judging panel of industry experts will evaluate the following categories: Boards, Modules and Embedded Systems; Cooling and Thermal Management; Electromechanical/Mechanical Devices; Enclosures; Integrated Circuits; Microwave and RF; Optoelectronics; Packaging and Interconnects; Power Sources and Conditioning Devices; Sensors; Solid State Lighting; Test and Measurement; Tools, Kits and Reference Designs; Contract Manufacturer Innovation; Distributor Innovation; Education Innovation, Green Technology and the Market Disrupter.

If you have a product that is a must-submit for any of those categories, visit www.ecnawards.com or for more information check out page 11. All products must be submitted by January 31, 2014.
Since this is also our last issue for 2013, I’d like to thank all the readers for a great year and we will see you in 2014.
Check it out here.
