DELO supports racing with structural adhesive for bonding motor magnet segments

By Paul Heney | June 7, 2019

DELO is a sponsor of Wisconsin Racing at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. DELO has supplied Wisconsin Racing’s Formula Electric team with DELO Monopox HT2860 to bond together the magnet segments in the car’s electric motor. The adhesive is also used for final rotor assembly.

Ideal for bonding magnets in electric motors used in cars, drilling, milling tools, washing machines, as well as in many other applications, this structural adhesive offers increased stability at high temperatures. DELO Monopox HT2860 achieves up to three times the strength at a temperature of 150°C. It has an operating temperature range of -55° C to 220° C.

Kevin Byrne, technical director of Formula Electric – Wisconsin Racing, said, “DELO Monopox HT2860 is the perfect choice for our motor because it aligns well with our overall motor design that has a maximum operating temperature of 220° C.”

Wisconsin Racing is a student organization at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Student teams design, build and test a prototype race car based on a series of rules and safety standards, while promoting clever problem solving. The students drive their own creation in the competition.

“This year’s competition is being held June 19th through the 22nd in Lincoln, Neb. Both a Formula Combustion and a Formula Electric competition will be going on simultaneously. The electric competition is smaller, but growing each year with approximately 30 teams competing last year. More international teams are expected to join this year because of a rule change concerning the voltage our accumulators are allowed to be at,” said Byrne.

Torsten Uske, president, DELO, said, “It is an honor to support student teams in the US and around the globe. We have a passion for technology at DELO. By sponsoring a team like Wisconsin Racing we are able to share our passion and see our adhesives at work, while helping students fulfill their passion for engineering, building and racing.”

“This is the second year in a row that DELO has donated adhesive to be used in bonding our custom permanent magnet motors. This donation played a critical part in the performance we achieved last year because it allowed us to segment our magnets into smaller sections, reducing the loses through the motor and increasing efficiency. This year we plan on refining the design the team created last year and really put the adhesive to work,” said Byrne.

Last year, Wisconsin Racing’s Electric Team won first place in engineering design at the Lincoln FSAE Electric competition. “This year we are focused on component level testing so that we can showcase the full potential of our vehicle and what our team is capable of,” said Byrne.
