Digital 300-400W Supplies with 5 Year Warranty Meet Medical & ITE Safety Specs

By Patrick Curran | August 18, 2011

TDK-Lambda Americas announced the extension of its warranty for their digitally-controlled 300-400W EFE series power supplies from 3 to 5 years. “This warranty extension is based on the product’s conservative design and excellent field reliability data since its introduction in 2008. By extending the EFE series warranty to 5 years, we are providing our customers with a substantial reduction in their overall cost-of-ownership,” said David Norton, VP of Marketing. Models in this series are certified to medical and/or ITE safety specifica-tions.

TDK Lambda Digital 300-400W Supplies

The EFE300-400M series is designed for both Medical and ITE applications. With a 4kVAC rein-forced input to output isolation and an output-to-ground isolation of 1500VAC, the EFE300-400M meets the rigorous international safety standards of IEC/UL 60601-1 for medical equipment, making it suitable for use in B (body) and BF (body floating) type medical and dental applications. Regulated DC outputs of 12V, 24V, or 48VDC are standard, plus other voltages can be provided.

With a 3” x 5” (300W) or 3.5” x 6.5” (400W) footprint and less than a 1U profile (1.34” to1.60”) the EFE300-400M can be incorporated easily into designs where space is limited so the end-product can be smaller and cooler. Other features such as a redundant operation capability, a standby voltage output and ITE safety certifications per IEC/UL 60950-1, make the EFE300-400M equally suitable for high-integrity applications (in addition to medical) including broadcast, instrumentation, routers, servers, security networks, ATE and factory automation.

The EFE400M delivers 400W continuous power and up to 475W peak for 10 seconds. And, non-standard output voltages can be accommodated easily by precise factory programming. An additional 12V/1A fan output is included and all models operate from a universal 90 to 264VAC input with dual-input fusing as standard. Earth leakage current is less than 300µA at up to 264VAC, fully complying with international medical safety requirements.

TDK-Lambda’s EFE300-400M units are approved to IEC/EN/UL/CSA 60601-1 for medical and dental applications, IEC/EN 61010-1 for laboratory and process control applications and IEC/EN/UL/CSA 60950-1 for ITE/general purpose applications. In addition, the unit carries the CE mark according to the LV Directive. The EFE400M is available in two configurations including: open-frame or U chassis with an optional cover and temperature-controlled fan.

The EFE300-400 series are ideal for non-medical applications such as ITE and process controls. The EFE-300 measures only 3” x 5” x 1.34” and the EFE-400 is only 3” x 6” x 1.34”. Typical appli-cations include broadcast, instrumentation, industrial, ATE, automation, routers, servers and security networks.

The EFE-300 delivers 300W continuous power (400W peak for 10 seconds) with nominal outputs of 12V/25A or 24V/12.5A, and the EFE-400 delivers 400W continuous power (530W peak for 10 seconds) with nominal outputs of 12V/33.3A or 24V/16.7A. EFE300-400 series are approved to IEC/EN/UL/CSA 60950-1 for general purpose applications and IEC/EN 61010-1 for laboratory and process control applications. In addition, the units carry the CE mark according to the LV Directive and are RoHS compliant.

All EFE series supplies include an integrated magnetics transformer (transformer and inductor windings on the same core) to boost efficiency to typically 90% and employ an 8-bit microcontroller for full digital control of the output and to handle housekeeping routines. This results in a 25% parts count reduction to achieve a 45% smaller and up to 56% lighter design when compared to similar competitive products. All models can be precisely factory programmed to accommodate non-standard system voltages. An additional 12V fan supply output is also available and all models operate from a 90-264VAC input. Active power factor correction ensures EN61000-3-2 compliance. Other EMC improving design features, such as the use of SiC diodes, ensure Curve B EMC performance with a significant margin.

The design of the EFE series allows the power supply’s performance, such as current limit and start-up characteristics, to be optimized digitally. This feature eliminates the hardware changes usually required in analog designs. A reduced cost primary side control topology is employed, supervised by the microcontroller. This results in fewer parts and higher efficiency without sacrific-ing load regulation performance.

The EFE series’ 5-year warranty is effective for all units purchased on or after August 1, 2011. This series are available now with prices starting at $164.42 each in 100 piece quantities.
