Space Imaging Middle East’s (SIME) cutting-edge Crime Prediction software is the newest recruit to join the Dubai Police Force.
The software uses advanced machine learning algorithms designed to analyze information gathered from police databases. The program recognizes certain crime-related patterns that might go unnoticed by human analysts. Using those patterns, SIME’s software determines the areas where crime is most likely to occur, and informs law enforcement. This not only aids in police arrests, but provides a larger police presence in high-risk locations, deterring potential misconduct.
“This software is uniquely intelligent in its capability to accurately discern intricate patterns of criminal behavior in seemingly unconnected events and then predict the probability of reoccurrence,” says Spandan Kar, head of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division at SIME. “We are confident that these precise analytics, when combined with the knowledge and instincts of experienced police officers, will create a formidable force to deter crime.”
Currently, there’s no statistical evidence if this software reduces unlawful behavior. Certain organizations even claim that the technology carries underlying racial biases, rendering the system unjust and ineffective.
Nevertheless, Dubai’s predictive algorithms were developed to support the city’s Smart Government Initiative, favoring a modern approach to crime prevention and city life. This technology adds to Dubai’s impressive fleet of supercars, as seen in the video below, which debuted in 2013.
