Eaton’s Online Virtual Tour for Packaging Industry

By Patrick Curran | February 25, 2010

PITTSBURGH, PA – Eaton Corporation announced a new online resource designed for the packaging industry. A virtual tour, available at www.eaton.com/packaging, demonstrates how Eaton helps improve equipment effectiveness through control, logic, sensing and display components.

Eaton-Packaging-Demo

“The virtual tour is designed to help machine builders envision how they can employ state-of-the-art automation systems to improve their competitive strength and reduce costs at the same time,” said Martin Carney, industry segment manager, Eaton Corporation. “Regardless of the specific packaging process, Eaton can help machine builders design and build smarter, more cost-effective packaging processes and equipment. Further, specific solutions are designed to increase system accuracy, reduce energy consumption and improve reliability.”

Taking customers through a spectrum of processes at a bakery/packaging factory, the virtual tour is applicable to a large cross-section of packaging processes. It illustrates how a variety of Eaton’s automation solutions are able to help make the process more efficient and effective every step of the way. The specific stations highlighted during the tour include:

• Component mixing
• Drying
• Cooling freezing
• Packaging
• Finished goods
• Power distribution

Specific solutions for each element of the process are highlighted along the way. For example, energy savings are possible through the combination of programmable logic controllers and variable frequency drive technologies. Appropriate sensing and monitoring devices enable systems to detect product, control a conveyor belt and supervise the system.

The tour also explores how extensive motorized systems – typically, roller conveyors – are used to handle the wide range of transport tasks during production and after packaging. New configurations and sophistication of controls have kept conveyors up-to-date, while being cost effective. In addition, the new functionality allows growing operations to easily expand and reconfigure based upon their needs. The energy required to manage the entire process, from component mixing to packaging and finished goods transportation, is considerable; with communication-enabled circuit breakers and power sensors, machine builders are able to constantly monitor the energy supply.
