Electric Propulsion System Contract

By Design World Staff | December 12, 2007

WOOD DALE, IL — By awarding the electric propulsion system contract to Danaher Motion, BAE Systems Hägglunds achieves a major milestone in the development of their new line of electric wheeled and tracked military vehicles.  Danaher Motion, the motion control and drive system manufacturer, will develop the propulsion system including power generators, electric motors for traction and steering, drive electronics and auxiliary power components.  Sponsored by FMV (Sweden’s Defence Material Administration), Hägglunds’ next generation military vehicle family has been designed to provide increased mobility and availability of on-board electrical power.  The unique electric design allows for volume-efficient packaging and high load capability while maintaining C-130 transportability.  The current design is sufficiently modular to allow for consideration of a hybrid electric drive option.

Through this contract, Danaher Motion becomes a first tier subsystem supplier to BAE Systems Hägglunds.  The initial contract, valued at $12 million (80 MSEK), is for the development, testing and installation of the electric drive systems for both the wheeled and tracked military vehicle variants. Danaher Motion’s key strengths have been in their extensive engineering expertise to provide unique hardware and software solutions for electric vehicles plus the ability to transition those designs to Danaher Motion’s global, cost-effective manufacturing capability.

At the signing ceremony, Hans Dreijer, VP Engineering of Danaher Motion OEM Systems, said “This is an exciting opportunity to develop the next generation of tracked and wheeled military vehicles.  Danaher Motion is pleased to be a key partner with BAE Systems Hägglunds.  This project is truly international in scope.  Danaher Motion is utilizing its technical and manufacturing expertise in three countries spread across two continents to develop what is a revolutionary military electric vehicle propulsion platform.  The project is being led by our electric systems technical team based in Stockholm.  Design responsibility for the motors and generators resides with our motor team in Radford, Virginia and motor production will be in our advanced facility in Brno, Czech Republic.”  With Hägglunds’ encouragement, this new propulsion system will also be offered for commercial, heavy-duty diesel electric hybrid applications.

Subject to satisfactory completion of pre-series vehicle testing, FMV will place their order for series delivery at  BAE Systems Hägglunds.  The Hägglunds vehicle platform is expected to change the face of armed forces around the world over the next 20 years.
