Electronic adhesives market expects a CAGR growth of 9% by 2026

By Michelle Froese | June 16, 2021

Although it’s tough to imagine the pandemic offering benefits of any kind, COVID-19 has correlated to growth for the electronic adhesives sector. The growth trend is due to the greater demand for electronic components and devices to boost contactless interaction and to use remote information technologies.

R&D for high-performance electronic adhesives is advancing to meet the precise bonding demands for miniaturized electronic devices and further driving this market forward.

According to JEITA — the global electronics, which is dedicated to promoting the healthy manufacturing, international trade, and consumption of electronic products — electronic and IT industries’ production has seen a two percent increase, with a year-on-year growth to reach U.S. $2.9 trillion.

This information, and more, is compiled in the latest research report from according to a new report from global market store, Research and Markets. According to the report, the electronic adhesives market is projected to register a CAGR of 9% during the forecast period (2021-2026).

Electronic adhesives are important components in electronics and are formulated to bond and protect high-performance electronic devices. This increased demand for adhesives in electronics is expected to continue, along with the rising demand for electronic products, globally.

Greater adoption of electric vehicles is one sector that’s expected to impact and drive the electronic adhesive market further. Surface mounting is another and it’s expected to dominate the market during the forecasted period. Also known as chip bonding, it’s a method by which electrical components are mounted directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB).

Electronic adhesives and surface mounting
Here’s some more insight into this sector…

  • Surface-mount technology extensively uses adhesives in such assemblies to mount electronic components to the surface of PCBs.
  • Electronic adhesives are used for wave and reflow soldering processes. These compounds have excellent electrical conductivity and are easy to distribute. The process includes placing surface-mount-devices on beads or dots of UV-curing adhesives, and curing the adhesive to securely hold the device in place during further processing.
  • Such adhesives act as a processing aid by holding the mount devices until permanent attachment by soldering and offer stress relief to soldering parts to prevent failure of electric connections.
  • The types of adhesives used in this application are mostly one-component systems, made from acrylics, epoxies, or urethane acrylates. The function of these adhesives also varies depending on the application. For example, they can either be electrically conductive or electrically non-conductive and/or thermally conductive.
  • Furthermore, electronic adhesives act as alternatives to tin-soldering. With increasing regulations, companies are shifting away from tin-soldering to the use of electrically conductive adhesives.
  • The properties of adhesives required for surface mounting include a long shelf life, non-stringing, high wet weight, rapid curing, high strength, good flexibility, and good electrical properties after curing. Moreover, single component systems are preferred for these applications to avoid air entrapment, viscosity changes, and pot life.

The growing research in the development of high-performance adhesives for mounting miniaturized devices in the electronics industry is estimated to be the main force driving the market in the next few years.

The electronics revenue is forecasted to grow by 3.6% for the year 2021 and expected to reach around U.S. $1.6 trillion. The market is expected to grow annually by a CAGR of 2.3%. The increase in demand for consumer electronics, in turn, will increase the demand for the electronic adhesives market.
