Ericsson to Diversify ‘Beyond Traditional Telcos’

Ericsson is looking beyond the traditionaltelecommunications space for growth opportunities, said company CEO HansVestberg during Ericsson’s Capital Markets Day in Stockholm, Sweden.

 “[We] are not satisfied with our position today and wesee new markets to address,” Vestberg said in a transcript provided byEricsson. “The capabilities we have in place today enable us to addresscustomers also beyond traditional telecom operators such as cable and TV companies,governments, healthcare, transport and utilities. These are industries wherethere is a huge need for telecommunication services.”

Vestberg, who took on the position as president and CEO atthe beginning of 2010, said Ericsson was “determined” to grow faster than theoverall market and would continue to invest in converged networks.

He emphasized that less than 5 percent of the world’spopulation has access to mobile broadband and put Ericsson’s total addressablemarket, including joint ventures, at $350 billion.

Vestberg was joined by several Ericsson executives,including Angel Ruiz, who heads the company’s operations in North America.

Ruiz, who joined Vestberg through a video link, saidEricsson now has access to half the market it couldn’t approach previous to itsacquisition of Nortel. “We take nothing for granted, but we are ready to moveto the next level and achieve even greater market leadership,” he said.
