CLEVELAND, OH — Estane® Engineered Polymers, a business group within The Lubrizol Corporation (NYSE: LZ) has developed Estane® X-1425 thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a technology that delivers lower smoke generation. Estane X-1425 TPU is specifically designed for wire and cable jacketing in non-halogen flame retardant applications.
The industry is placing greater emphasis on the development of new compounds that produce lower smoke and higher Limited Oxygen Index (LOI) to reduce flame spread. Estane X-1425 TPU meets this industry demand for wire and cable jacketing used in applications such as robotics, industrial equipment and mass transit systems where low-smoke fire resistant materials are necessary.
“Estane X-1425 TPU combines great flame properties, low smoke and low heat release while maintaining good mechanical properties for extrusion,” said Chris Boyher, extrusion marketing manager — Americas Estane TPU. Estane X-1425 TPU provides an LOI of 33 and achieves a UL vertical burn rating of V0.
Estane TPUs are known for their superior abrasion, wear, tear and puncture resistance compared with conventional materials such as rubber or PVC. “We continue to offer our customers a full portfolio of high performance non-halogenated compounds for wire and cable jacketing, and this new grade supports Lubrizol’s commitment to be the technical leader through innovation,” Boyher adds.
