Fanbeam production moves to Renishaw facility

By Garrett Harmon | May 14, 2014

Renishaw is now the force behind Fanbeam, with the acquisition of MDL in July 2013, and recent relocation of production operations to the company’s award-winning Gloucestershire, UK assembly facility. Renishaw’s Spatial Measurement Division now manages the design, production, servicing and promotion of Fanbeam – the world’s primary dynamic positioning (DP) position reference system for offshore support vessels. Many of the former MDL team remain in post and are supported by new resources in research and development, engineering, calibration and servicing.

Fanbeam is the most widely used laser DP position reference system in the world, having pioneered the technology two decades ago. The latest version, Fanbeam 5, represents the most intelligent laser DP reference position system yet, and the technology has been adopted fleet-wide across a large range of vessels.

Renishaw plc is a British-based FTSE-250 engineering technology company with more than 70 offices in 32 countries. Since its formation in 1973, the company has won numerous awards, including 17 Queen’s Awards, recognizing Technological Achievement, Export Achievement and Enterprise (Innovation). Renishaw’s assembly facility in Gloucestershire was named the UK’s best electronics plant in 2012.

Renishaw’s Keith Park, Marine Business and General Manager, has worked with Fanbeam for 18 years. According to Park, “Fleets operate globally, and they need a DP system provider that does the same, with the scale and resources to keep fleets at sea. Renishaw’s involvement with Fanbeam means our customers will have access to the level of customer service they expect from one of the world’s leading engineering companies, anywhere in the world.”
