Fast EV charger ready for work

Editor’s note: This electric vehicle charging station will encourage the use of (what else) electric vehicles and speed the nation’s weaning, to some extent, from imported oil. Power will come from a variety of sources, wind among them, letting us continue our mobile ways while leaving consumptive habits in the rear-view mirror.

First DC fast charger for electric vehicles now installed and operational at ABB’s office and production site in the industrial park in New Berlin, Wisc.

Terra 51, an intelligent dc fast charger that reduces EV charging times from eight hours to as little as 15 to 30 min, is certified and compliant with all relevant safety standards, as specified by UL, for the U.S. and Canada, and now is available for delivery. The certifications demonstrate compliance with North American safety directives, including the requirements of UL 2202, Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging System Equipment, and CSA C22.2 No. 107.1-01, General Use Power Supplies, intended to ensure safety of electrical equipment. The Terra 51 is also compliant with the Federal Communications Commission Federal Code of Regulation Parts 15B and 15C, pertaining to radio and frequency emitting devices.

A few features of the Terra 51 include:

  • Open network protocol support – ABB’s chargers can be connected to any charging network or community by the Open Charge Point Protocol, the widely adopted international open networking standard for charging equipment.
  • Cloud connectivity – The developers smart grid capabilities offer range of connectivity options to help operators run networks more efficiently. These include managing peak load, remote monitoring and management of charging sessions, and seamless back-office integration. All Terra systems can be connected to ABB’s Network Operations Center, which provides remote maintenance and software updates.
  •  Multi-protocol – The chargers and future products will support all existing and future connection standards and communication protocols to drive the continued growth of EV infrastructure in North America.
