Fiber-Optic EtherCAT® I/O

By Design World Staff | November 14, 2008

Share

Two EtherCAT‚® modules increase wiring flexibility for fiber-optic cabling for Industrial Ethernet applications: the EK1501 EtherCAT Coupler and EK1521 junction terminal. The modules allow communications to distances of 2 km (1.24 miles) over 100BASE-FX.

While EtherCAT I/O Terminal system supports all common wiring topology methodologies (line, ring, tree and star), the Coupler and junction terminal enable flexible EtherCAT topologies through the use of glass fiber technology. Using 100BASE-TX, the maximum distance between two EtherCAT I/O stations is 100 m (328 feet).

The EK1501 fiber-optic coupler connects EtherCAT to any number of EtherCAT I/O Terminals. The wiring connection is made via SC duplex sockets. An additional fiber- optic module can be optionally connected via a second port; an additional switch is not required.
