Today on Engineering Newswire, we’re breaking world records with Legos, checking up on spoiled food without smelling it, and using lobsters to find bombs. This episode features:
Lego Bot Breaks World Record: The Cubestormer 3 robot is made of Legos, but more than that, it is now a Guinness world record holder for solving a Rubik’s Cube in 3.253 seconds. Designed by David Gilday, a principle engineer at ARM, the smartphone is powered by an Exynos 5 Octa application processor with an eight-core ARM big.LITTLE implementation.
Color-Coded Gel Tags Reveal Spoiled Food: To provide consumers warnings of when their packaged food or prescription drugs are in danger of spoiling, a team of Peking University researchers have developed a color-coded smart tag that uses nanotechnology to react to the actual technology that the items are stored in.
Electronic Noses Sniff Bombs: Researchers at the University of Florida are finding that lobsters could one day help protect soldiers. Using data from the lobsters, the researchers have created algorithms that give artificial silicon neurons the ability to not only recognize a scent, but also find it.
