World’s smallest laptop charger
You can get an idea of how small Finsix’s Dart power supply is from the conventional inline-brick laptop supply next to it, hear held up by Finsix principal engineer Victor Sinow. Both put out about 65 W but the Finsix device fits in the palm of your hand. It includes a USB connection so it can power phones as well as laptops.
Key to its small size is that it is a switching power supply operating at VHF switching frequencies — around 100 MHz according to company literature. In comparison, ordinary switching supplies usually work at about 1 MHz at most. The use of higher frequencies reduces the size of the circuit components involved. VHF-range switching supplies are a hot research topic but usually involve wide bandgap SiC or GaN power devices. Sinow says the Dart uses only silicon power transistors.
