Checking on grandma
The Evermind system is billed as a way of providing peace of mind to those who live alone, or who need extra support, and the people who care about them by detecting when electrical appliances are switched on and off.
The idea is to plug a compatible appliance (such as a microwave oven, coffee maker, TV, a lamp, and so forth) into the Evermind socket shown here. The socket plugs into an ac outlet. Then each time the appliance is used, the Evermind socket sends out a text message or email via a cell phone modem built into one of the sockets. The message goes to a family member signaling that everything is okay. If a text message doesn’t arrive when it should, it may be time to check on things. Evermind says the cell phone communication is necessary because most older people don’t have Internet connections.
