It’s still a materials world
Some problems in manufacturing boil down to fundamental factors such as judicious use of materials. That was the case with this engine block from a large truck. Tech Solve was brought in after problems arose in the boring and tapping operations involved in making the blocks. The cutting tools for these operations wore out rapidly. To make matters slightly worse, tweaks implemented to improve tapping operations made boring results worse, and vice versa. The culprit turned out to be that the alloy of the block material changed when the block transfer line moved from one part of the country to another. Tech Solve engineers analyzed the materials used, did a machineability study, and examined coolant practices to come up with a solution for the problem.
