Now that’s a torroid
Torroidal transformers often get used when there is a premium on energy efficiency and lighter weight. This mock-up of a 46 kVA transformer, at the Powertronix booth, represents a unit that would have an energy transfer efficiency of about 99% thanks to low field leakage and other factors, where an equivalent E-I type transformer might be in the low 90% range. Powertronix says MRI machines often use torroidal transformers of about this size.
