HotSpot Episode 22: Drowning Detection System Creates Virtual Safety Network

  • Lilliputian Systems has created the nectar, a portable power device that will power all of your CE devices, from smartphones to digital cameras. Based on Silicon Power Cell technology, the nectar is a plug-less charger that can power and recharge CE devices for several weeks on a single power pod without the need for traditional wall outlets. Featuring a USB 2.0 interface, a standard 5 volt output, and 55,000 mW of energy per hour, this mobile power system is sure to cure those dead battery blues.
  • Brazilian startup Kinetics has created a new communication technology called NearBytes, which fills the gap that exists in the interaction between devices. With this new patented technology, it’s now possible for any Android/iOS device in the market to transfer data between older smartphones by using sound. NearBytes doesn’t require any special hardware and is intended for exchanging smaller bit of data than for streaming high def video.
  • InfoMotion Sports has developed the 94Fifty sensor basketball that uses technology from Texas Instruments (TI) including Bluetooth/Bluetooth low energy dual-mode connectivity, a digital signal processor to perform advanced analytics, and a Qi-compliant wireless power technology that enables the ball to be charged without plugs or wires. To help track your game, the sensor basketball comes with a base app that includes the following: A Workout mode that helps improve your skills and motivates you to practice. A Quick Training mode  that helps you focus on specific skill areas; a Compete mode for head-to-head competition; and a Challenge mode that allows you to interact with other players around the world via Twitter.
  • According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is responsible for more deaths among children than any other cause except congenial anomalies. To offer an extra layer of protection, Seal Innovation created the SEAL wearable swim monitor and drowning detection system. Containing three main components: the hub, swim bands and a unique electronic signature, the SEAL creates a virtual safety network between swimmers, lifeguards and parents by receiving and transmitting RF signals to the hub, continuously reporting on a swimmer’s status.
