Huntsman launches low-odor, non-flammable structural adhesive

By Michelle Froese | January 26, 2022

Huntsman, a multinational manufacturer chemical products for consumers and industrial customers, has launched the ARALDITE 2080 — a new low-odor, non-flammable, and primer-free structural acrylate adhesive that’s ideal for work in confined working environments.

New Huntsman ARALDITE low-odor, non-flammable structural adhesive offers high performance and improved user wellbeing.

As an industry first, the new adhesive drives productivity and lowers costs with none of the compromises associated with traditional methyl methacrylate (MMA) and other adhesive products. For decades, manufacturers across the transportation, wind, and general assembly industries have used MMA and other traditional adhesives for structural bonding applications.

While these products are effective solutions, they offer challenges in the form of high odor, flammability, high toxicity profiles, and surface preparation.

Huntsman’s ARALDITE 2080 solves these issues while providing high-bond strength and elongation, better flowability, and faster cure times.

Furthermore, the new adhesive helps to reduce costs with no need for primers or designated flammable storage areas while, at the same time, requiring less need for protective equipment and extensive training.

Key features of ARALDITE 2080 adhesive include:

  • Low odor – with up to 90% less smell than alternative products, this adhesive helps to increase end-customer and employee satisfaction, especially in confined working environments.
  • Non-flammable classification – helps to minimize costs for safety training, storage, transportation, and equipment. In addition, it eliminates the need for the installation and maintenance of designated flammable storage areas.
  • No primer – does not need a primer for surface preparation, which halves production times and reduces costs, while providing the same bonding strength.
  • Low toxicity profile – offers an improved Globally Harmonized System (GHS) classification, which means users will save on personal protective equipment costs and other risk-management measures.

“ARALDITE 2080 adhesive is truly unique,” says José Fanjul, strategic marketing manager in Huntsman’s Advanced Materials division. “This adhesive line can solve many challenges associated with traditional MMA and other adhesives while delivering sufficient bonding performance. It will be a game-changer for manufacturers who want a structural adhesive that not only increases productivity and saves costs, but also safeguards the wellbeing of their employees.”
