This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. As the Director of the Southwest Environmental Finance Center at the University of New Mexico, Heather Himmelberger focuses on finding better ways to manage and pay for public water systems. Public water managers provide our communities with a resource upon which all else depends. Clean, reliable water and the infrastructure that supports it is something many in our society take for granted. Himmelberger sees upcoming water issues of quality, quantity, and infrastructure as an opportunity to invest in a sustainable water future and choose to put water first.
Heather Himmelberger is a registered professional engineer with over 27 years of experience working with water and wastewater utilities and in the environmental arena. She has a BS in Environmental Engineering from Penn State University and an MS in Environmental Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. She has been the Director of the Southwest Environmental Finance Center since 1996. As Director, she has assisted state, local and tribal governments with the broad financial implications of providing environmental services, such as water and wastewater, and complying with state and federal regulations. She has provided well over 100 trainings regarding water issues. She also serves as a board member on EPA’s Environmental Financial Advisory Board.
