ROSS Operating Valve was created to meet the requirements of Detroit Seamless Tube after a fire destroyed their existing valves. From that unexpected yet opportunistic beginning a company was created based on the premise of improving designs and meeting the customers’ requirements.
ROSS worked closely with customers not just to provide products but to provide innovative solutions. It is this response to customer demand that allowed Ross to develop new and innovative products. This is especially true in for safety applications.
ROSS poppet valves were well known in the stamping press industry for their reliability but the risk of injury led customers to use two valves to ensure worker safety. ROSS introduced a monitored dual valve for clutch brake applications in 1954, nearly 20 years before the OSHA standard for presses was introduced requiring their use.
55 years ago, in 1963 ROSS introduced the first valve for lockout of pneumatics for machinery. OSHA did not begin to require this until the 1980s but clearly customers saw the need and Ross met the challenge.
During the 1980’s and 1990’s ROSS expanded its custom-tailored solutions for challenging applications with the beginning of its ROSS/FLEX® process, and the innovation continued with dual valves for cylinder applications to ensure that a safe state was achieved. Requirements for safety are just starting to be recognized in some global standards such as ISO 13849-1, CSA142, and ANSI/PMMI B155.1-2018.
In 2009 ROSS expanded its poppet valve offering with the introduction of its Dale Series – including both inline and manifold options for high flow, vacuum, port pressure independent, and leak test applications.
From 2013 through 2016, ROSS expanded the family of DM Series Safety Exhaust Control Reliable double valves with dynamic monitoring and memory, introduced the M DM2® Series double valves with optional soft start capability. ROSS also expanded its CROSSMIRROR® Series double valves family used for safe cylinder return. Soon after, ROSS introduced the DM1 Series C valves and DM2® Series C Explosion-Proof valves used in hazardous locations, an expansion of the DM Series product line. All above mentioned safety valves can be used in up to CAT 4/PL e applications.
In 2017 ROSS introduced its new M35 Series Safety Exhaust Control Reliable double valves designed for external monitoring for safe redundant operation. The M35 Series is an inline valve with threaded or modular mounting capabilities up to CAT 4/PL e machine guarding applications.
In 2018 ROSS saw more expansion in fluid power safety than ever before with the introduction of both new pneumatic and new hydraulic safety products.
On the pneumatic side ROSS introduced a new safety capability for the industry that has no match. The ROSS CC4 valve is the world’s first safety-rated directional control valve in a 4/3 closed center function which is available with a safety rating up to CAT 4/PL e.
Additionally, ROSS introduced its RSe Series of pneumatic safety double valves that can accommodate either safe exhaust or safe cylinder return applications.
For hydraulic applications, ROSS is now providing safety-rated hydraulic double valves for block and bleed functions as well as block and hold functions. Again, these products are rated for applications of up to CAT 4/PL e.
All these new safety valves are designed for external monitoring by the customer’s safety control and monitoring system. However, in 2019, you can expect more products coming down the pipe that will include onboard electronic monitoring.
