NFPA is continuing to organize webinars that focus on how standards can help address key issues facing the fluid power industry today:
- increasing energy efficiency
- improving reliability
- reducing environmental impact
- ensuring system safety
These webinars are presented by leading experts in those standards that can help you apply fluid power more effectively and efficiently. Each 60-minute presentation includes at least 15 minutes for questions and answers; here is your chance to talk with the people who know these important standards best.
Our next Webinar will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 pm Central on Wednesday, November 13, 2013.
Learn how to make your hydraulic system cleaner and more reliable
Using ISO standards to improve hydraulic system contamination control
Presenter: Leonard Bensch, consultant for Pall Corp.
Contamination in hydraulic system fluids is generally recognized as the single most important factor in reducing equipment reliability and operating efficiency due to wear. Nearly every system incorporates filters with the intent to control the contamination; however, in many instances, little thought and, certainly, little science goes into the proper selection and application of filters.
This webinar includes a brief discussion of contamination types and sources and the damage contamination causes to hydraulic components. It also describes various ISO standards for measuring and reporting contamination levels and for evaluating all aspects of hydraulic filter performance. It emphasizes the steps necessary to determine the required cleanliness level (RCL) for a hydraulic system and the selection and application of filters to maintain that cleanliness.
About the presenter
Leonard Bensch, PhD, has been involved in the field of filtration and contamination control for more than 46 years. He received engineering degrees from Oklahoma State University, where he conducted and led contamination and filtration research projects for 12 years. Dr. Bensch also was employed at Pall Corporation for 29 years, most recently as Vice President, and continues to serve as a consultant. He has authored more 130 technical papers in the area of filtration and contamination control. He is the past chairman of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO/TC 131/SC 6 (contamination control) and currently serves as convener of the ISO working group for hydraulic filter evaluation.
