Switches often provide sensing information in go/no-go or on/off applications. For example, they are used in vehicles to indicate the gear lever position and sufficient fluid level for the brake fluid reservoir. For these and other applications that require a small, high-performance switch, a new Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS)-based magnetic reed switch from Coto Technology Inc. could be the answer. The RedRock RS-A-2515 switch uses high aspect ratio MEMS design and manufacturing similar to the technology used in many MEMS sensors. With this highly reproducible approach, the switch achieves a footprint of less than 2.1 mm2 (1.01 x 2.08 mm) and is 0.94 mm high making it the smallest MEMS-based reed switch available today. The switch’s capabilities include zero power operation and high-power hot switching.
