It was a cold ending for a NASA balloon tasked with carting telescopes 24 miles above Antarctica. The equipment was used to study the sun and its impact on satellites and life on Earth. The balloon and other equipment, which floated above the continent for 12 days, was salvaged recently after spending a year in the ice.
