New 24″ Marine-Grade Panel Computer to be Presented at OTC 2014

By Frank Tobe | April 28, 2014

Moxa announced that it will be showcasing its new 24″ marine-grade panel computer at the 2014 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), Booth 12218 in Houston, Texas, from May 5 to 8.

The DNV-rated MPC-2240 is a marine-grade 24″ touchscreen LCD panel computer engineered specifically for ship navigation and will be demoed live at the show. In addition to the MPC-2240, Moxa will also be demoing the Class 1 Div 2-rated EXPC-1319, one of the industry’s toughest touch panel computers for hazardous locations, as well as their upcoming Class 1 Div 1-rated IP video surveillance solution. A comprehensive selection of hardened networking and communication products for oil and gas users will be on display, and industry experts will be on hand to offer free consultation on how to ensure the most reliable communications for different oil and gas applications.

MPC-2240 24″ ECDIS Panel Computer
Embedded computing displays aboard ships and ocean platforms have two glaring problems for maritime professionals when out at sea: Low-light environments, and the technical inexperience of the average user when confronted with computer malfunctions. The Moxa MPC-2240 is an ECDIS panel computer with major advances in the display interface that lessen the effects of these problems, and improve the overall user experience.

Powered by the Intel® Ivy Bridge Celeron® CPU processor 1047UE, the MPC-2240 provides 4 GB of system memory, allowing for lightning fast graphics renders suitable for a wide variety of maritime HMI and navigation solutions. It is certified for use as an ECDIS display station, and may also be ordered with ECDIS IEC 61174 type approved model for use in bridge navigation systems.

SavvyTouch™ Display Controls
Because ECDIS charting stations are accessed day or night, their display brightness must be constantly adjusted according to lighting and environmental conditions. During the day, the brightness would be much higher, while at night, much lower. To help assure the ideal brightness levels, the MPC-2240 offers Moxa’s exclusive SavvyTouch™display controls equipped with a proximity switch that lights up the controls with a mere wave of the hand, making it possible for users to easily adjust the display even in absolute darkness.

The LCD can be configured for full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio) and comes with full range dimming from 0 to 100%; optical bonding to present vibrant, accurate colors even under bright sunlight; wide viewing angles with no fading or color washout; and PCT multi-touch features. With PCT multi-touch, up to 4 simultaneous touch points may be manipulated at any time, using either bare fingers, a stylus, or even gloved fingers.

Ultra-Reliable Marine Design
Preventing computer crashes and malfunctions while out at sea requires equipment purpose-engineered for harsh marine environments. Although it does not use any kind of fan, the MPC-2240’s careful thermal engineering gives this panel computer steady reliability when working in the heat extremes common in industrial marine environments, and the IP54 rated enclosure provides strong, durable protection against moisture, dust, and other environmental hazards. It is compliant with a variety of marine standards, including IEC 60945, DNV, and IACS E10.

The MPC-2240 was built with a modular design to help reduce deployment costs and overall time-to-market by allowing convenient and rapid integration into a wide variety of systems. This modular design, combined with its low heat profile and low power consumption, make the MPC-2240 an easily integrated component for both upgrades to existing systems and new installations.
