New CAD/CAM Release Offers Variety of Updates

By Design World Staff | April 14, 2009

VX 2009 was unveiled recently with an expanded Show-n-Tell learning system and 10 new on-line tutorial books for healing, mold and die design, and two to three axis machining in several languages. VX 2009 authoring tools can help you create design review and assembly instruction documents directly in VX. New 3D ballooning and text tools help you choose fonts, color, and border style and lock balloons to screen locations or directly to models.

Improved feature previews, dynamic axis selection, and expanded sketching reduce design effort and speed design decisions.

The software suite includes enhanced VX Innovator and 3D Machinist as separate modules. VX Corporation claims that you can start out with Innovator and grow into advanced surfacing, digital model reconstruction, and mold and die design, and machining. Innovator offers a floating license support and targets product and mechanism design, detailing, design review, and quoting.

VX 2009 introduces new interface enhancements and better reliability. You can constrain lines and arc tangents to splines. There are new options for 2D linkages with an added D-Cubed 2D constraint manager in VX sketcher. In addition, patterning is upgraded with a new preview option that shows the result so changes can be made more quickly.

The VX Overdrive engine can handle more extreme geometry conditions. The draft command supports changes in draft angle that can cause complete faces to be removed. The simplify command supports more complex cases and can clean up shape intersections. Filleting handles more fillet cases.

Barriers to learning are nearly eliminated with on-screen 3D book tutorials. You can work at your own pace and on your own schedule with example models that can be rotated and zoomed for better understanding.

All VX 2009 products include a direct interface to the TraceParts and CADRegister libraries with complete bill-of-material support. TraceParts lets you insert parts from thousands of suppliers directly into a VX assembly over the Internet without requiring a separate download.

2D drawing creation offers improved editing of section and detail views. VX Corporation claims users have total control over formatting of BOM, hole, and electrode tables and their associative balloon layouts. Balloons can be organized with automatic or manual sorting. Manual edits are retained when details are regenerated. The new balloon dimension stretches the border to match the text length.

Thumbnail images for each CAM parameter help explain settings so changes to machining operations are easier to understand. VX QuickMill high-speed milling engine in 3D Machinist and the End-to-End products are refined for better performance and reliability.
