New Compact 7-inch Panel PCs from Beckhoff

By Frank Tobe | July 21, 2014

To best serve the HMI hardware needs of cost-sensitive machine builders and manufacturers, Beckhoff Automation has introduced the new CP6606-0001-0020 “Economy” Panel PC. The CP6606 combines a full color 7-inch TFT touch screen display (800 x 480 WVGA), 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, and 1 GB DDR3 RAM ̶ offering an all-in-one HMI and controller with an impressive price-to-performance ratio. In addition, ultra-compact microSD flash memory cards are used as the storage media.

BeckhoffDesigned as a cabinet-mounted device in a fanless, space-saving format, the CP6606 is ideal for use in PLC and small motion control applications that require compact, low-cost HMI hardware. When paired with the feature-laden TwinCAT runtime (version 2 or 3), the CP6606 becomes a flexible automation controller for small and medium-sized machines, factories or buildings. Microsoft Windows Embedded Compact 7 is offered as the operating system. The CP6606 can also be used as an OPC UA client or server, greatly boosting the flexible connectivity and remote access capabilities of the device.

“Beyond the high quality color touch screen, the CP6606 series also features robust housings constructed of aluminum at the front and sheet-steel rear covers, far surpassing the durability and quality of the plastic panels that are too common in the low-cost HMI marketplace,” said Reid Beilke, IPC Product Specialist at Beckhoff Automation LLC. “In addition, the bezel on the CP6606 is slightly curved, resulting in a lower profile when installed in a cabinet and it enhances the attractive appearance of the display.”

Built to withstand demanding plant environments, the CP6606 Panel PCs feature an operating temperature range from 0° to 55° C (-25° to +65° C storage temperature range) as well as IP 54 protection at the front of the panel and IP 20 at the back. All connectors are conveniently located at the back and bottom of the panel for easy accessibility. Available connections include: 1 x slot for a microSD flash card, 1 x COM1 serial interface, 2 x USB ports, 1 x Ethernet port, 1 x EtherCAT port, and power.
