New smart encoders from Baumer for heavy duty applications

By Miles Budimir | February 20, 2025

With the new HOG800 series, Baumer presents the next generation of encoders featuring enhanced protection against corrosion, shaft currents, overvoltage and mechanical stress. Baumer has adopted the smart functions of its broad industrial encoder platform to be available for heavy duty applications. Some of these smart functions are intelligent parameterization of resolution, output level and rotation direction with embedding in the Baumer Sensor Suite. New functions to monitor sensor status, temperature and operating time are also available.

The HOG800 series provides high-performance encoders for demanding applications with highest standards in terms of reliability and precision. These uncompromisingly robust HeavyDuty encoders are perfect for deployment in asynchronous motors, cranes, hoists and cold rolling mills. With compact design and versatile protection, the HOG800 series is the perfect choice for speed detection in asynchronous motors in harsh environments.

Legendary robustness and smart additional functions
The integrated smart functions of the HOG800 series simplify commissioning and maintenance: The Baumer Sensor Suite allows for electronic nameplates to be easily read and labeled, parameterization of resolution and output circuit as well status information requests. Continuous monitoring of sensor status, outputs, temperature and duty cycle reveals any potential malfunction at an early stage.

The HOG800 series also features space-saving dimensions with housings merely 84 mm wide. The sealed and user-friendly design allows for convenient field installation even in demanding conditions. Another benefit is the encapsulated sensing unit which during terminal box installation is protected against dirt and dust with IP40 rating. Furthermore, the terminal box with plug-in terminals ensures easy and safe wiring. The wires inside the terminal box are separated from the shaft to prevent the cables from being jammed or damaged.

Product variations of the HOG800 series include:

  • HOG840 is the cost-efficient variant particularly designed for wind turbines and machinery. It features high C4 corrosion protection according to DIN EN ISO 12944, is capable of operating temperatures ranging from -30 to 85 °C and cable lengths of up to 200 m (HTL-P).
  • HOG860 has been designed for demanding applications at machines and asynchronous drives. Unlike HOG840, HOG860 features extended electrical protection, specialized parameterization options, status monitoring as well as extended temperature range from -40 to 100 °C. And, HOG860 features CX corrosion protection for particular resistance to corrosive environments.
  • HOG870 is a redundant HeavyDuty encoder with redundant sensing and evaluation with 6 additional outputs. This encoder is designed for safety-relevant applications.
  • Further to incremental signals, HOG890 features three digital switches for long-distance transmission of standstill, speed, direction and status information to the control unit.
