Newark element14 launches a RIoT board, encouraging an ‘Internet of Things’

Newark element14, a high-service distributor of technology products and engineering solutions, launched an open source, single-board platform Revolutionizing the Internet of Things (RIoT) board.

The RIoT board has been designed to run Android operating systems efficiently and features a high processing performance-low-power consumption processor. The processor features a broad range of peripherals and display capabilities, making it perfectly suited as a hub for the Internet of Things (IoT).

The board, ideal for Android and Linux development, is based on the Freescale i.MX 6Solo processor, and uses the ARM Cortex-A9 architecture. Priced at $74 the RIoTboard is available from Farnell element14 in Europe, Newark element14 in North America and element14 in the Asia-Pacific.

“The RIoT board has been designed for and supported by a community of design engineers and application developers,” says David Shen, Chief Technology Officer at Newark element14. “The hardware design has an optimized form factor, utilizes one of the latest high performance multimedia processors and has been optimized for low power consumption. Addressing these key design challenges up front will reduce development time and time to market.”

  • Smart Home Appliances
  • Medical – Patient Monitoring and telehealth
  • Factory Automation and HMI
  • Digital Signage
  • Point of Sale equipment
  • IP Phones, Scanners and Smart Metering

Reducing system cost, board size and complexity with low power, the BOM-optimized platform includes:

  • The Freescale i.MX 6Solo processor based on ARM Cortex-A9 Core architecture at speeds up to 1 GHz
  • The Freescale Kinetis K20 MCU
  • The Freescale MMPF0100Power Management Integrated Chip
  • 1 GByte of 32-bit wide DDR3 at 800  MHz
  • 4 GB eMMC

The RIoT board platform also includes a rich set of peripherals including a 10M/100M/Gb Ethernet port, 1 USB 2.0 OTG High Speed and 4 USB 2.0 High Speed 2.0 Hosts, LVDS, HDMI and Parallel RGB interfaces, micro TF and SD card interfaces, analog headphone and microphone jacks, camera interface, serial ports, JTAG, and boot configuration interfaces.
