Nine-axis solution combines IMU with TMR for orientation tracking

By Redding Traiger | October 16, 2025

TDK Corporation has introduced tunnel magnetoresistance sensors as part of its sensing solutions for gaming peripherals. The TMR sensors target applications in keyboards, controllers, mice, webcams, augmented and virtual reality devices, driving wheels, and pedals. TDK’s gaming sensor portfolio includes TMR-based sensors, MEMS motion sensors, microphones, and ultrasonic time-of-flight sensors.

TMR sensors provide ten times the sensitivity of hall sensors. This sensitivity level affects performance characteristics in gaming devices where response time and precision are factors in operation. TDK is expanding its custom sensing solution offerings to manufacturers of gaming equipment globally.

The company’s sensor solutions for gaming applications include a PositionSense nine-axis solution that combines an inertial measurement unit with TMR technology for orientation detection and navigation. TMR-based sensors are used in driving wheels, pedals, mice, controller sticks, trigger buttons, and AR glasses hinges to detect position and movement. TMR-based linear sensors provide low latency and positioning precision in keyboard applications.

TDK also supplies low-power MEMS microphones with high signal-to-noise ratio for voice-activated interfaces, ultrasonic time-of-flight sensors for wear detection and gesture tracking, and temperature sensors for measuring body or ambient temperature. InvenSense, a TDK group company, has provided sensing solutions to gaming equipment manufacturers for more than 15 years, beginning with SmartMotion inertial measurement units in controllers and AR/VR headsets.

MEMS sensing solutions available through distribution partners include the SmartMotion ICM-45686 for AR/VR applications and ICM-42670-P for gaming controllers. SmartSound MEMS microphones T5837, T5838, and T5848 are designed for AR/VR devices, controllers, and webcams. SmartSonic ultrasonic time-of-flight sensors ICU-30201 and ICU-20201 target AR/VR applications.
