The testing agency UL, once known as Underwriters Labs, says it will now accept self-balancing scooters, also known as hoverboards, as candidates for a new certification called UL 2272. The new standard specifically covers the hoverboard electric drive train including the rechargeable battery and charger system combination for use in self-balancing scooters.
UL says the new label is designed to evaluate and test the entire self-balancing scooter for electrical and fire-hazard safety as a system. Retailers and manufacturers interested in submitting hoverboards for product testing and/or UL certification can submit a request via the form at http://contact.ul.com/contact-ul-energy, or email [email protected].
UL also provides consumer safety tips, information about the test lab’s work to combat counterfeit UL marks, and facts about UL’s involvement with hoverboards at www.ul.com/hoverboards.
