ONAP Unveils ‘Beijing,’ its Second Software Release

By Bevin Fletcher | June 13, 2018

The Open Network Automation Platform on Tuesday issued its second software release, named “Beijing,” with a goal of making deployment of the platform easier.

The latest release targeted improvements for the group’s “seven dimensions of deployability:” manageability, performance, resiliency, scalability, security, stability and usability.

Beijing incorporates TM Forum’s Open APIs — which carry MEF-defined payloads — to provide external, northbound interfaces that enable orders to be placed and fulfilled. ONAP said the collaboration with MEF and TM Forum ensures those frameworks and APIs can communicate seamlessly with the ONAP platform.

The latest release, which followed the debut software “Amsterdam,” also ensures that ONAP Operations Management supports migration to microservices-based deployments on Kubernetes.

It also provides documentation and training for Virtual Network Functions developers and operations managers, officials said.

“We are delighted to announce the availability of ONAP’s second release, Beijing, which advances the architecture, seven dimensions of deployability, and new automation functionality,” Arpit Joshipura, general manager of networking at The Linux Foundation, said in a statement. “As a community, we celebrate the progress the Beijing release brings to the ecosystem and look forward to additional deployments of the platform.”

ONAP listed AT&T, Bell Canada, China Mobile, China Telecom, Orange, Reliance Jio, Verizon, Vodafone and Turk Telecom among the large global carriers integrating Beijing into new and existing proofs of concept and production plans.

A developer forum for the third software release, to be named “Casablanca,” will be held in China next week.
